Malene Knudsen
Malene has always had an urge to create and explore new crafts and materials. Exact the same driving force started her journey with clay a couple of years ago. She completely fell in love with the raw material and started the process of creating her own form language.
As a creator, Malene is engaged in binary elements, which represent a unique expression. She masters to combine contrasts between the soft organic shape and the hard material, and her works appear both masculine and feminine with its porous and robust form.
The stoneware used in her works naturally fires to warm tones of cream, sand and brown, only with addition of coarse-grained firesand for a textured surface. Using types of clay with such inherently beautiful properties gives her a responsibility to maintain its native characteristics. With a desire to uphold the aesthetic and depth of surface in her unique pieces, she leaves the clay raw and unglazed.
She is focused on combining art, design and functionality. Her works are a line of vases designed for minimal floral arranging or to stand on their own as sculptural objects. Every piece are made by hand with precision and personality and each very unique and one of a kind.
Malene has a formal background in architecture from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts - Schools of Architecture, Design, and Conservation. The Danish artist lives and works in Copenhagen
