“ Square Orange Sun is created as a tribute to the sun. The symbol of the sun in the Japanese flag refers to Japan as the land of the rising sun. This strong symbol of a simple geometrical shape has been the starting point for working on the piece. Thus the piece embodies the symbolic value of the sun as the greatest life-giving factor in our solar system, as well as a strong visual character of simple geometry, balanced with the functional qualities of a traditional drape. "
The placement of the orange silk is arranged to make the viewer look upwards to the ceiling, the sky, and the sun.
The orange color in fragile silk is used as it is the complementary color to the light green painted surfaces in the store. The use of silk originates from eastern textile culture as well as the technique used in the Stichting.
Transparent fabric scraps open up for views towards the exterior and the sky - ever-changing depending on the viewing position.
In a location such as the Yonobi store where the windows are facing north on a narrow street, you don’t get to see the sun directly on the blue sky. This piece is to remind you that it is out there. Also, as the artist was making it she kept thinking about a natural phenomenon of a square sun that can be seen when certain temperature circumstances create what appears to our vision as a square sun.

Studio Fie Paarup is a Copenhagen based design studio, working in the intersection between art, design, and architecture. Since 2017 Studio Fie Paarup has been creating handcrafted bespoke drapes and spatial textile designs with inspiration found in the traditional Korean textile art form called Pojagi. The Asymmetrical patterns of these site-specific drapes reflect on the geometries and light of the space and the cultural-historical context; thus engaging in a contextual relationship between the light, shapes, and history of their environment.
In respect and love for our planet, as well as future generations, a sustainable design approach and philosophy comes first in all projects by, among other actions, using textile remnants and reused fabrics.
Fie Paarup holds a master's degree in Architectural Lighting Design from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Design.
