This class is for you who want to go 'back-to-basics' and want to participate in both sculpting, glazing, and firing the final pieces.

The class will run over 5 sessions and is part of our summer festival, where we enjoy the Danish summer in different ceramic activities. During the first 4 sessions we will work in the studio where you will be introduced to the basic techniques of sculpting and hand-building. If you are already familiar with sculpting, you can feel free to work at your own level where I will guide you in detail and technique. Mainly we will build small objects, so they will fit into the fire. The last day we will meet at the firing location (this will be added soon, but will be a location close possible to reach by public transport or bicycle etc.). We make a pit fire with wood and a raku fire.

Raku is an old Japanese tradition, where the ceramics are exposed to high-temperature changes, which makes a significant pattern on the surface. In this class you will Raku-fire your own pieces which gives you a unique opportunity to join the fire-process. What normally is a ‘hidden’ process inside the kiln, is in this class turned upside down, and is now an active, wild and wondrous process.

Pit-fire is the most ‘old fashioned’ way to fire your ceramics. We fire-up a campfire with wood and try to imitate the way ceramic was fired back in the days. We will wrap the objects in different materials that will leave traces on the clay. Pit-firing raw clay can be wild, hard to manage but most of all really fun!

Raku is fast and pit-fire is a slow process. So we will spend most of the day at the site, talking about ceramics and firing your creations in these two ways. At the end of the day, you can bring your work home with you.
